Private Guided Tour of Cayenne’s History : History

On August 5, 1498, during his 3rd voyage, Columbus reached for the first time the coast of Guyana.

Later, an expedition ordered by French King Henri IV and conducted by Ravardiere settled a camp on the island of Cayenne in 1604. But it was destroyed some years later by the Portuguese who intended to enforce the Treaty of Tordesillas.

In 1643, a group of 300 men lead Charles Poncet de Bretigny accosted in the cove of Armire (now Rémire-Montjoly). After 2 days of walking, they reached a small hill in the middle of the coastal plain swamps. The hill was home of a Native Americans tribe : the Galibis. Charles Poncet de Bretigny bought the hill to the tribe chief, whose name was “Cépérou” and there started to built the Fort Cépérou.

From that date, the small colony will experience a turbulent history, made of destructions, conflicting relations with neighboring Indians, battles with the English, Portuguese, Dutch…

In October 1652, the first black slaves from Africa were introduced into the territory.

Between 1777 and 1821, the Laussat canal was built by prisoneers, to clean up the city swamps. In 1821, the architect Sirdey drew the plans of the current Cayenne, with streets at right angles running north / south, east / west. The modern Cayenne was born.

Following the decree abolishing slavery in the April 27, 1848, the plantations closed and the Guyanese economy collapsed. To remedy this, Napoleon III set up orisons in Guyana. Cayenne hosted one of these prisons on the Chaton Anse, near the Pointe de Buzare.

The prison will be permanently closed in 1946, thanks to the famous reporter Albert Londres and Gaston Monnerville.
